I was interested in the info that you posted having received a similar e-mail a couple of days ago, and the following was my response if it fits the same as your advice: The title: "just so people don't get ripped off buying what they don't know..." [credit to alee@midway.uchicago.edu for this phrase re the posting of overpriced cd set] Noticed an offer on the chi.forsale group, the following is my opinion based on examination of such claims ... An "ad" is posted promising thousands of dollars return for five dollars. This is not a legitimate "network marketing" method. There are a number of valid network marketing operations, such as Amway, Shaklee, LDDS offering products for sale or discount long discount telephone service. Those involved in such companies sometimes receive a great return however not without a good deal of sweat and effort (at least in the beginning!) Here are the risks that are not told: The classic "pyramid" concept is one where you're asked for money and all that you receive is a promise that someone else somewhere else will send you money. The initial promoters of such get the best return, (the top of the pyramid). Soon the "market" gets saturated, (everyone has already heard, and is not buying) and no money comes in (the base of the pyramid). Think about it, where is the money coming from? If you approach 5,000 people and every one of those 5,000 pool a little bit of money and pass it around where does the "extra" money come from? If they divided the pool evenly, then they're back where they started at first. No, instead a few get the entire amount of the pool and the rest get nothing. Some years ago, a prominent Chicago minister engaged his church members in an "investment strategy". The strategy was putting up money and signing a list; then getting as many others to sign up; watching the money grow because of being on the list. This was ruled to be a "pyramid" and the minister agreed to pay the people back once the concept was exposed. (In an interview, the minister stated he thought the method was "valid".) The crucial idea here is the making or sending of a list is not a service equal to getting back a return of "thousands and thousands" - no matter how much initial money you send. Suggestion: invert the pyramid. Send your money to your favorite cause- the environment, feeding the hungry, helping the homeless, cancer research. If this method works, help those less fortunate. "For the love of money is the root of all evil". A final beef - It is my understanding that the "chi.forsale" group IS NOT for use of investment schemes, psychic hotlines, advice to the lovelorn ETC. This group is for those of us who want to buy/sell that auto, washer, set of skis, rocking chair that we're not able to use that someone else wants to buy. All the foregoing is my opinion.
