CON-CON CONVERSATIONS...

PRO has helped fuel discussion of the proposed Constitutional
Convention (CON-CON) through its computer bulletin board activity.
Our PROponent articles and other items contributed by Dennis Carney
seem to have encouraged discussion of this important issue.
At first many were so taken aback by the fact of the two
remaining votes needed to call a con-con and the content of the
"Newstates Constitution" that they accused PRO of perpetrating a
hoax. However, soon BBS members began to dig out facts. They
found out that a prime mover of this document was Rexford Guy
Tugwell, a member of the FDR "brain trust". He died in 1978. They
found that it was indeed produced by the Center for the Study of
Democratic Institutions for whom Tugwell worked and that the Center
still exists, but has moved to Los Angeles. They also began to
examine the subtlety of the document. One person was appalled to
discover when dissecting the provisions giving the president (small
"p") dictatorial powers to implement the new system that they
didn't mean the President of the United States but rather president
of the convention!
Some BBS contributors naively asserted that the present
Constitution would limit a convention from going beyond the
proposing of amendments. Let me say that Senators Orin Hatch and
Strom Thurmond don't think so because they have introduced S.214
designed to use the power of congress to set the rules for a
convention to limit the subjects discussed to those of the
resolutions of the states calling the convention. Another BBS user
surmised what I believe to be the correct analysis: "What this
"constitution" boils down to is a ... wish list."
Power-hungry politicians will go for what ever the people
permit. If that's only a balanced budget amendment then they'll
take it. But already the media is beating the drum for repeal of
the Second Amendment. Columnist George Will (cfr) and NBC News
president Michael Gartner are calling for the Constitution to be
changed. This is just the shadow being cast before the events. I
can assure you that by the time a con-con convenes the media will
be screaming for our guns with one voice. There will be constant
propaganda about how a few "minor" changes will cure all the ills
of present day society. Once the last states call for a convention
the news blackout will suddenly be lifted and you'll hear of
nothing but the "historic" events coming to pass.
Dennis Carney heard a radio ad here in Columbus a few days ago
that was paid for by the National Taxpayers Union of Ohio which was
urging everyone to call their State Reps to encourage them to
support resolutions calling for a convention. There is money now
here in our state and these folks mean business. Write Vern Riffe
and your State Rep. today. Urge them to vote against HJR-11. It's
important!
