NOT RESPONSIBLE...
Look anywhere in the media today and you find the same message
repeated over and over: No one is responsible for their own acts.
One kid shoots and other right between the eyes and the television
news sympathizes with the emotional mother of the perpetrator.
Criminals aren't responsible either. It was the stress of modern
life, or maybe too many twinkies that made them mug that elderly
woman and bash in her head. Or maybe it was something far more
powerful - The Gun. Yeah that's it, the guns committed the crimes,
killed victims and injured innocents.
Lance Morrow in the March 9, 1992 Time magazine has written
the definitive expression of this philosophy:
"Guns have a sort of irresistible black magic about them. A
good gun has such a lovely heft, a densely sinister weight in the
hand. The brain is wired to the trigger finger and fires on
impulse. The finger twitches, and -blam!- the life across a
distance -poof!- disintegrates: an existence powdered. The finger
did it on a whim. ... Conscience is disconnected from trigger
finger. Child is disconnected from future. Bullet is disconnected
from gun muzzle and, once fired, can never be recalled."
We'd say the media has such an irresistible magic about it.
Such limitless power that with a few odd symbols set in a certain
order, millions can be sent marching to their deaths. It's not a
whim. It's for control. The fingers twitch at a keyboard and
truth is disconnected from the brain. Responsibility and reason
are disconnected from writer. And the printed word having been
launched into the marketplace to do it's deed, could, but never
will be retracted.
