GEARING UP FOR BACKGROUND CHECKS?
Well the "Brady Bill" or some substitute "compromise" such as
the Staggers "instant check" has not yet passed congress but there
are already indications that some of those in power already know
what to do to get that list of gun owners. If you remember the
piece in the August 1991 PROponent called "The Briar Patch" in
which we explained that any computer "instant background check" is
exactly what the gun grabbers would like since dealers and gun
owners could actually do their own key punch work to put their own
names into a computer if the request is intercepted from the phone
lines.
Well it seems the FBI isn't even waiting for a bill to pass to
get ready to have the capability of collecting names. According to
the World in Review newsletter the FBI has just announced it is
seeking an additional 2.5 million dollars to buy state of the art
snooping equipment. They say they need this equipment to intercept
messages between computer terminals and to listen in on cellular
phones.
Of course, the argument is that this equipment is only to be
used against narcotics traffickers and organized crime, but the
FBI's record of abuse against political activists is much less than
exemplary. There have been more than a few cases come to light of
honest law-abiding citizens being surveilled because they caught
the attention of politicians and leaders. In one notable case, the
FBI received word of a possible assassination attempt against a
certain political activist and they sent agents to the meeting
where this was to occur...not to stop it, but rather to watch it
take place. It didn't.
So just who will be watching to see that background check
requests are not intercepted to build a list of gun owners?
Nobody. In the past the FBI has very strongly stonewalled all
attempts of oversight or even freedom of information requests. I
believe it would be safe to assume these policies will continue.

POLITICAL STATEMENT...
"This has been a big week for entertainment. The number 1
movie in the country is "Wayne's World". If you haven't seen it
yet, it's about two guys without jobs who chase girls and are
always trying to score. That's just what we need-two more
Democratic candidates."
Jay Leno
