Dublin Gun Ban?
DUBLIN FOLLOWING COWTOWN?
On July 9, 1992, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Dublin
City Council Member A.C. Strip is proposing restrictive firearm
legislation and a waiting period for Dublin, Ohio. Strip said that
he would like Dublin's proposed ordinance modeled after Columbus'
gun control laws.
Strip's comments continued: "I do so because of my growing
concern that one day we may be faced with a situation where deaths
or injuries were brought about with a gun that was purchased in
Dublin and which could not have been purchased in other cities in
our area." "That very fact is currently being flaunted in
advertisements, and it is not something of which Dublin can
necessarily be proud."
In conclusion, Strip added "I don't want angry people to hop
in their car and drive up I-270 because they know there's no
waiting period and plenty of guns to be bought in Dublin."
Obviously, Mr. Strip hasn't driven north on I-270 lately. The
profusion of orange barrels and road construction would make anyone
driving north angry.
This editor talked briefly with Mr. Strip on July 10, 1992,
and was informed that Mr. Strip was a gun owner and not out on a
crusade. He again stated that he thought that the gun
advertisements placed by Davis Guns were not in the best of taste.
He is also aware of the more than 20,000 laws restricting Americans
Second Amendment rights and of the progress of the Columbus
lawsuit.(Editor: More on the Columbus lawsuit in this issue.)
PRO has notified all of its members in the Dublin area with a
cover letter and a list of the Dublin City Council members home
addresses, telephones, work telephones and fax numbers, asking them
to contact Strip and all other members of Dublin City Council,
including the Law Director. In this issue of the PROponent is the
list of Dublin City Council and their numbers. If you know of
someone in Dublin, make a copy of this list and give it to them and
ask them to call and write these individuals. Then call and write
them yourself.
This is the first time in the country, that we are aware of,
that a suburb has instituted gun legislation after the larger city
adjacent or surrounding it has done so. This is a scary thought.
Is Strip doing this because of the ads by Davis Guns? Is he doing
this out of a desire to protect law-abiding citizens from
criminals? Or is pressure being brought by Columbus City Council
on Dublin to enact a gun ban similar to theirs?
In the past several years, Dublin has had major sewage
problems. The most notable being the dumping of raw sewage into
rivers upstream from Columbus. Another ongoing problem is the
amount of water consumed by Dubliners in washing cars, watering
lawns, cooking and bathing. Dublin is a little suburb on the move.
It is growing by leaps and bounds. People are escaping the cities
and fleeing to the suburbs. Especially the rich ones.
With Dublin being dependent on Columbus for sewage and water
services, is the Columbus City Council forcing Dublin to enact this
legislation in a tit for tat maneuver? Does anyone here remember
the famous bridge incident? When Dublin didn't go along with the
wishes of Columbus city fathers, they just closed the main bridge
going into Dublin as blackmail. Oh sure, it was indeed scheduled
for repair. But word has it that the Big "C" let them know that
construction would not begin until Dublin toed the mark. As we
remember Dublin caved in and construction began forthwith. Is
Columbus saying that if Dublin enacts similar gun control
legislation that maybe Columbus would help them ease their water
and sewage problems? An interesting conundrum.
We can tell you one thing, if PRO finds out that Columbus city
leadership is behind this Dublin ban, not only will there be Dublin
PRO members at Dublin city hall, but there will also be the rest of
us down at the Columbus Council Chambers as well. If this does
come to pass, our advice to Dublin council members would be to
paraphrase New York gun-grabbing governor, Mario Cuomo: You tell
Columbus city fathers to go to hell and you vote against the gun
ban!
