TO TELL THE TRUTH...
One of our PRO members recently said something very
interesting, "If you listen very carefully, politicians usually
tell the truth." Before you dismiss this statement out of hand as
garbage, let me point out that the key phrase here is "listen very
carefully."
PRO is constantly fighting lies. Lies in the media. Lies from
gun-grabbers. Lies seemingly repeated by politicians. But there
is something different about the way politicians operate compared
to the other two. If Sarah Brady tells a few whoppers (as she does
constantly) to advance her side, and gets caught facing hard cold
facts, so what? At most she just mumbles a little about being
"misinformed" or more likely just goes on fibbing, because there
are no consequences to being caught. The same goes for the media.
They might just ignore the truth, or maybe print a letter to the
editor, or in the worst case print a retraction. But politicians
are different.
The first and foremost job of a politician is getting
re-elected. Being caught in a gross lie could impact greatly on
that goal. Therefore what politicians do is appear to tell lies,
while in actual fact make statements which if carefully dissected
word by word can be shown in some way to be true. The reason for
this is simple. When the media begins to scream on some issue as
directed from behind the scenes, many politicians (who answer to
the same elite) also wish to appear to be good soldiers and join
the chorus. Now some who are firmly assured of re-election can
just go along with the lies, but most must be mindful of the day
when they may be called on the public carpet to explain their
statements in the light of cold hard facts. Therefore, their
self-defense mechanism is to make statements which at first glance
appear to support some current campaign, such as gun bans, while at
the same time wording them in such a way that later they can point
to exactly what they said and say, "see you just misunderstood what
I meant!"
This technique works well because it first of all has the
propaganda effect of making the non-critical public think that old
Senator So-And-So supports some new policy, say a military-style
firearms ban, and yet he still can get out from under the
consequences of his support later if the issue sours (say because
of suppressed reports that they are not used in crimes). There is
however, great political benefit of this practice to us. By
carefully evaluating exactly what the politician actually said as
opposed to the public and media habit of evaluating what he seemed
to have said, much is often revealed about true feelings and
motivations.
One such example involves the question of just who Ross Perot
answers to. When he recently decided to terminate his campaign, to
understand his motives a local TV station dug out an old interview.
When asked about why he wanted to run, Perot said he didn't want to
be president, but that "if the people who run this country want me
to run" then he would run. Notice at first glance he seems to be
saying that if "the people" as in "We the people" want him, he will
run. But the critical observer, will notice that "We the people"
do not run the country. Why often a majority don't even vote!
Thus, what we really have here is a clear statement from Perot that
he will do exactly whatever the Washington power-elite want him to
do! Apparently, they don't want him to run.
Another example I saw was when a TV interviewer asked Clinton
where his "Slick Willie" title came from. Oh, Clinton explained
there are just a bunch of staunch liberals and staunch
conservatives in my home state who started that. Notice that what
he has said is that both liberals and conservatives with conviction
and integrity in their respective beliefs all think he is "Slick
Willie". The strong implication here seems to be that anyone not
ready to flip-flop their beliefs with the prevailing wind - no
matter what side they are on - isn't on the Clinton side!
Our advice to you as the election cranks up is to listen very
carefully to political statements, there is a mother lode of truth
out there to be mined by those that have the ears to hear it.
