COP KILLER...
It's kind of a tempest in a teapot, but the best part is it's
payback time for the massive Time-Warner operation for all the
grief they have given us gun owners about being uncontrolled
killers, maniacs and criminals. I'm talking about the uproar over
rapper Ice-T's new "song" generated by the NRA full page ad in USA
Today as well as criticism by the Bush administration and some
members of Congress. According to Ice-T, "Cop Killer" is actually
rock and roll, not rap and is being called rap, some liberals
suggest, because of the racist overtones of the critics. However,
even liberals are not attempting to defend these lyrics.
Let's get this straight: We defend all the amendments in the
Bill of Rights, including free speech. In Ice-T's defense, you
will see that the lyrics are not a call to kill cops but rather
represent the thoughts of some un-named killer. HOWEVER, you will
also observe that this material is not for kids. It is rated X.
X for language. X for violence. I think more of us than Tipper
Gore should be worried about these records being sold to high
school kids. It certainly shouldn't be played on the air. I say,
if Time-Warner wants to sell this stuff through adult bookstores
well, OK. But using their massive promotional staff to sell it to
kids is reprehensible.
Our local liberal rag, Columbus Alive! (July 23, -August 6, 1992),
on the other hand, has used the occasion for NRA bashing saying,
"As for the NRA, they have been quite vocal in their defense of a
citizen's right to own AK-47's and teflon coated bullets - bullets
that Dewey Stokes of the Fraternal Order of Police tagged 'cop
killers'." While they were right about AK-47s, it is not true and
has never been true that the NRA favored ownership of teflon coated
bullets. These so-called "cop killer" bullets have never killed a
cop and indeed were developed for police to kill criminals
protected by so-called "bullet proof" vests. This ammunition was
never offered for sale to the public by the manufacturers. The NRA
and various police representatives (not Dewey) begged sponsors of
the bullet ban legislation not to bring up the issue because
publicity would inform criminals of the possibility of using these
bullets. To no avail. Rep. Mario Biaggi (since convicted)
introduced a bill that would have banned virtually all ammunition
used in big game hunting and self-defense. So the NRA resisted
that aspect. However, the NRA actually helped Congress write the
legislation that finally passed.
And speaking of publicity, Alive! writer Jeffrey Winbush comes up
with the oddball theory that if some fruitcake uses this record to
get the idea of killing "pigs" then somehow the NRA is also
responsible since they "manufactured the controversy to further
their own selfish interests." I would point out that this same
theory would make Alive! responsible for the next skinhead gay
bashing in Goodale park since that was an issue they "manufactured"
to "further their own selfish interests." It would also make
Time-Warner responsible for the Westbecker shootings since a Time
magazine was found in his apartment open to a piece on mass-murder.
One item I find particularly humorous is that the Alive!
article asserted that the NRA ad quoted the lyrics "out of
context". As you will see, about the only line in this "song" that
could be quoted out of context is "I got my stereo bumpin'". Of
course you can't (or shouldn't) form an opinion without seeing the
lyrics so PRO is providing them here as a public service. Judge
for yourself.
"COP KILLER"
I got my black shirt on.
I got my black gloves on.
I got my ski mask on.
This Sh--t's been too long.
I've got my 12 gauge sawed off.
I got my headlights turned off.
I'm 'bout to bust some shots off.
I'm bout to dust some cops off.
Chorus:
COP KILLER, it's better you than me.
COP KILLER, f--- police brutality!
COP KILLER, I know your family's grievin'
(F--- 'EM)
COP KILLER, but tonight we get even.
I got my brain on hype.
Tonight'll be your night. I got this longa--ed knife,
and your neck looks just right.
My adrenaline's pumpin'.
I got my stereo bumpin'.
I'm 'bout to kill me somethin'.
A pig stopped me for nothin'.
Chorus:
DIE, DIE, DIE, PIG, DIE
F--- THE POLICE! (repeat)
F--- THE POLICE! (repeat)
F--- THE POLICE, for Daryl Gates.
F--- THE POLICE, for Rodney King.
F--- THE POLICE, for my dead homies.
F--- THE POLICE, for your freedom.
F--- THE POLICE, don't be a p---y
F--- THE POLICE, have some muthaf---in' courage.
F--- THE POLICE, sing along.
COP KILLER! (repeat)
I'm a muthaf---in' COP KILLER!
COP KILLER! (repeat)
