PRO Counters NBC!
NRA-PRO COUP ON NBC...
This is what it is all about! All the years of work, all the
gun shows, all the radio talk shows, the candlelight vigil, your
dues, the newsletter, our political efforts and the fact-gathering
comes together in an effective stroke, blocking a major
gun-grabbing initiative. I can't express how proud I am of our
organization and the way that our leadership responded to the call.
As you may have already noticed the gun-grabbers have mounted
a major push to pass a handgun registration bill disguised as a
"waiting period" law despite it being an election year and NBC news
fired the opening major salvo. They trotted out head propagandist
Tom Brokaw (cfr) to make their pitch and I can tell you it was one
skillful job of twisting truth and promoting an all-powerful
government.
But this garbage did not go unchallenged. The "new" NRA-ILA
send out letters asking members to call their local NBC affiliate
protesting this so-called "news" program which was little more than
a promotion for the gun-banning, Second Amendment repealing agenda
of NBC News president Michael Gartner. Through the miracle of
modern computers the NRA letters individually targeted individual
NBC affiliates which is WCMH (Channel 4) here in Columbus and
mentioned WCMH president Leonard Leiberman by name. The only thing
missing (PRO pointed out) was the telephone number of the FCC
complaint department.
The effect was phenomenal! Channel 4 switchboards were jammed
with angry callers. WCMH began to cast about for some way out of
this hot seat and our spies at the station indicated that they were
thinking of putting together a panel show to help present "both
sides of the issue." Upon learning of this, we immediately
contacted the NRA to get approval to act as their spokespersons
with the result that PRO members Ron Herman, Dave Buda and Pat
Lucas ended up on the program representing the NRA position.
Having three of the six panel members pro-gun was a coup in itself,
but it turned out better than that. Neither Adam Troy of the Ohio
Commission on Black Males or Pam McCarthy of the Central Community
House would jump on the "guns are bad" bandwagon. Even Dewey
Stokes the final panel member, appeared rather subdued and seemed
to be in his "good cop" mode [at least on the air]. Maybe it was
just because he was outnumbered, although he did get in his pitch
for the "Brady Bill".
To me this show is what NEWS is supposed to be about:
Concerned citizens sitting down and discussing the problems facing
our community, raising real issues and considering real solutions.
I have no problem with Dewey being given a chance to speak so long
as we are given the same opportunity. Channel 4 gave us that
opportunity.
For the first time we had the opportunity to bring our message
of targeting criminals ... not the law-abiding to a major media
audience. We had the chance to show Central Ohio that our concerns
are not just "gun culture" but also the loss of family values and
the economic hardship of inner city life as contributing factors to
the violence in our town. The primetime audience could see for
themselves that pro-gunners are actually on the same side with some
of the community leaders working to solve the problems of violence
in our schools and neighborhoods.
Sure, WCMH only responded to pressure, but lets give them
credit. Remember the carrot as well as the stick. We need as many
people as possible to sit down and write a letter to Channel 4
praising them for this program. Tell them how refreshing you found
a news program that really presented both sides of the issues
instead of stacking the deck in favor of some political agenda.
Tell them you would like to see more of this kind of informative
programming available to our community. Write to:
Leonard Leiberman
President, WCMH 4

Also, the next time you run into Pat Lucas, Dave Buda or Ron
Herman, tell them what a GREAT job they did for all of us. So
while the rest of the country just had to sit through NBC's
anti-gun propaganda here in Columbus, Ohio we got in our say first!
