CALIFORNIA COVER-UP...

Now that the suburb of Dublin, OH is considering gun control,
we are all sure to hear all the same old tired and just plain wrong
arguments trotted out again. You know, how guns are just too
"available", how military style firearms are the "weapons of
choice" of criminals, and how family members will get into an
argument over picking up dirty socks and just start shooting -
unless they are forced to "cool off" for 10 or 15 days and come to
their senses. All the gun-grabbing politicians will be standing up
for the media pretending all these old saws are true, even if they
know better, just like they did when the first "assault weapon" ban
passed in California.
And it is now clear THAT THEY DO KNOW BETTER IN CALIFORNIA.
According to a headline story in the July 17 Gun Week various
California newspapers are reporting that California Attorney
General Dan Lundgren covered up an embarrassing state Dept. of
Justice report that showed guns on the banned list "played a very
small role in assault and homicide cases." This is a fact that
should have been easily verified in any police property room BEFORE
the passage of the ban.
In actuality, what we saw was testimony from fine examples of
law enforcement leadership like LAPD Chief Daryl (blacks have
different necks) Gates which the Orange County Register now says
was " at least fudged, if not outright falsified." So while the
gun ban law has at lowest estimate already cost the state treasury
4.5 million dollars, we find in the suppressed California study
that of the 4844 guns crime labs kept track of, only 45 fell under
the Roberti-Roos list. One percent! And of the 963 guns actually
used in homicides only 36 were on the banned list. Even of 341
gang-related fatal shootings handled by Los Angeles County
Sheriff's Dept. in 1990 and 1991 only 28 were on the list.
"Weapons of choice", indeed!
