JAPAN...
Japan has long been a bastion of gun control. As PRO and every
other pro-gun organization has said over and over again, "When guns
are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." In a 42 hour period
preceding July 11, 1992, there were an unprecedented amount of
unrelated handgun crimes from a drug-addled cop-killer to a serial
revenge killer to a gangland yakuza shooting to a bungled holdup at
a pachinko pinball center. These crimes have left one police
officer and three businessmen dead, one officer and four civilians
wounded and the general populace deeply shaken.
The 42 hours were filled with two big city car chases, a
1,400-officer manhunt, two hostage holdouts, closed schools,
rerouted buses, terrified neighborhoods and guns-drawn arrest
scenes that could have come from American TV.
Japan's top police officer, Ryoichi Suzuki said "A secure
Japanese society has been contributed to by strict controls on
firearms and drugs, but that is changing now."
When the civilian populace is disbared the use of firearms,
then they are at the mercy of corrupt, power hungry politicians and
every dirt-bag criminal that wants something without having to work
for it.
(Editor: The above information came from the New York Times and
was talking about Tokyo. It was reprinted in the Columbus Dispatch
on July 11,1992.)
