OOPS, BUT IT TURNED OUT OK...

At the PRO Board Meeting on June 2, 1992, the NRA letter was
read in regards to the one-sided TV special to be aired on June
5th. It was decided at that time to take no action until the
program aired, and then to decide on how to respond to it. In
retrospect, this was wrong.
The NRA letter stated that Michael Gartner, President of NBC,
intends to wage war on the Second Amendment and our gun rights in
an ABC News Special. Gartner wants to destroy the Second Amendment
to the Constitution and he's planning to put the full media power
of NBC News behind his efforts to ban guns in America. He stated
in a recent USA Today article that: "...Change the
Constitution...there is no reason for anyone in this country,
anyone except a police officer or a military person to buy, own to
have, to use a handgun."
Thanks to the efforts of Gerry Smolak, the Board was prodded
and goaded into annoying Channel 4, along with thousands of other
irate NRA members, about the "news" program. PRO and NRA members
were able to convince Channel 4 to air a call-in debate program
before the "America the Violent" media hoax.
PRO chairman, Ron Herman, legal advisor Dave Buda, and PRO
member Pat Lucas fielded questions from 7:00 pm until 8:00pm on the
night of the show. Channel 4 had allowed for ten minutes of air
time before the NBC propaganda. As the week wore on, this was
expanded to a full hour, with options raised about follow-up shows.
PRO would like to thank Channel 4 for their mediating the hour
long special, and acting as gracious hosts to concerned members of
the community. The moderators were Colleen Marshall and Cabot Rea
Three others also appeared on the show with the PRO/NRA
members. The major protagonist was Dewey Stokes, Fraternal Order
of Police Union president. Stokes again showed his incompetence by
referring to BATF form 1044 throughout the program. Mr. Stokes, it
is BATF Form 4473 and IRS Form 1044. I sure hope that you do not
receive notice of an IRS audit in the near future. Yes I do.
A noted member of the black community, Adam Troy, disagreed
with Stokes as much as he agreed with the NRA/PRO panelists.
