"EVIL" GUNS...

Well, the big "D" is at it again. Dispatch police reporter
Bruce Cadwallader is a caterwaulin' about how the sale of
confiscated rifles, pistols and shotguns by police is putting these
firearms back on the "street". Of course when he says "street" he
doesn't mean what we do. He doesn't mean firearms illegally in the
hands of felons, criminals and drug dealers. No. He means guns in
the hands of honest home owners, I guess he thinks the name fits
because their homes are located on a "street" somewhere.
It seems according to his piece in the May 26 Dispatch the
Columbus police gave crime a tremendous boost by trading in their
old .38 caliber revolvers together with 312 confiscated firearms to
a dealer for new Smith & Wesson .45 caliber semi-automatics. The
dealer said the used guns were sold at retail shops in New York and
Florida. As near as I can tell, the thrust of this article is that
putting these guns "on the street" and boosting crime in these
crime states is OK, but just don't let any of these "tainted"
firearms find their way back to Ohio.
I guess if a gun is once used in a crime, it acquires evil
spirits from the act. It seems pretty clear that any citizen who
later buys that firearm will likely be overcome by the influence of
that evil spirit and thus also be induced to commit criminal acts
against his or her will. Only by melting them down and using fire
to drive out the evil can we save all these honest folk from a life
of crime. Give me a break. I guess old Bruce must be one of those
light-steppers appearing at our parks and festivals that teach our
kids how the time-honored tribal traditions of face painting can
serve as a substitute for self-defense from your enemies (as well
as protection from evil spirits).
What the Dispatch staff does not seem capable of, however is
multiplying 1500 new service semi-autos times $500 bucks each and
coming up with three quarters of a million dollars in taxpayer
money. Chief Jackson, on the other hand not only did that
calculation, he also did another one: $54,000 in general fund money
+ drug seizure money + .38 caliber police trade-ins + confiscated
firearm trade-ins = 1500 new pistols. He used the second one.
Quite frankly I resent the Dispatch calling me a criminal
simply because I happen to own a firearm. I strenuously disagree
that if I or any other citizen legally buys a gun from the retail
dealers that took the police guns in trade, that somehow those
firearms are automatically going to increase crime. I don't need
to hear former Chief, Dwight Joseph, who as I remember seemed to
retire with amazing speed when there was talk of some kind of
investigation, telling us that guns sold to honest Columbus
citizens doesn't make sense because they are just "back on the
street."
I say if the Columbus Dispatch wants to start taking these
guns out of circulation as a civic duty then let the Wolfe family
take $750,000 of the money they earned running their newspaper
monopoly and buy them up. Then as legal owners they can melt them
down or do anything else they wish with them, just as I, as a legal
owner, can use mine for my legal activities. But let's not have
anymore talk of taking another million dollars from the taxpayers
because guns sold to honest citizens is somehow going to cause
crime.
