Dear Friends;
  I would like to tell you about a woman from West Pittston, PA (Northeast
Region) who has made the battle agains drugs her mission.  After 6 young
people died in a five day time frame, Sharon Manganiello a 47 year old
Mother of 6 decided it was time to take action to raise awareness to the
drug / Alcohol abuse & addiction crisis.
    On October 16, 1997 Sharon started walking from her home in West
Pittston
Pa. to Washington, DC. It took her almost 2 weeks, 24 miles a day 297 total
miles as I followed behind her in an RV to provide her with protection and
shelter.  When she arrived she met with Congrssman Paul Kanjorski and
General Barry McCaffrey, the presidents Drug Czar.  They were profitable
meetings and greatly showed the support of those in Washington.
    Sharon has continued her mission by becoming a member of the local
Heroin
Task Force and is in the process of forming several organizations for the
fight against drugs.  She is also part of the committee that is in the
process of revising the drug policies in Luzerne County.
    On April 29th she accomplished yet another milestone which the
policiticians could not do.  She was able to unite 2 large counties
together to present "Uniting Counties for Drug Awareness".  This
presentation offered a wealth of information to parents and community
members in all surrounding counties.
    Again, Sharon still feels that her message needs to be heard a message
which is very simple,  "Get involved,  Do what you can.  If everybody gave
of themselves no matter how small or large of the creativity and labours
that they have to offer and worked,  work inspired by love,  towards the
solutions of this drug crisis we could begin saving our childrens lives,
our nations lives."  And she feels that more people need to hear it.  So in
September Sharon will again don her walking shoes.  Only this time she is
taking her message across the Nation.  She will walk & bike from the
Atlantic
Coast to the Pacific Coast.  This walk is over 3500 miles and should take
her about 2.5 months. She will start in New Jersey and walk and bike through
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado,  Arizona,
Utah, Nevada and end in Santa Barbara, California.
   We,  her support team an organization that Sharon started. called
"Another Step Forward" are trying to get the word out to as many people as
possible. She will need all the support she can get along the way.  More
information will be available as September gets closer.
