Brad Rowse Memorial Wildlife Policy Fellowship In late December 2004, the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and the sportsmen's-conservation community lost a rising star with the death of Brad Rowse. As CSF's State Caucus Manager, Brad monitored sportsmen's issues at the state level and built relations with state legislators and sportsmen's groups to create a unified front for sportsmen. Through Brad's early leadership and dedication there are now 26 state sportsmen's caucuses and a network to support their growth and success. To develop future wildlife professionals and to carry on the passion that Brad Rowse brought to sportsmen's policy, the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and The Wildlife Society have partnered together to create the Brad Rowse Memorial Wildlife Policy Fellowship. This six-month fellowship based in the nation's capital will give natural resource students the opportunity to learn the importance of the public policy process on hunting, fishing and conservation issues from January - June or July - December 2006. The fellow will spend time with both organizations learning about federal and state legislative initiatives that impact sportsmen and fish and wildlife conservation. DUTIES: Interns will split their time evenly between TWS and NASC. Most of the interns time will be spent tracking state and federal legislation that impacts hunting, fishing, and wildlife conservation, writing and assisting with the preparation of the NASC email newsletter and TWSs publications and providing timely information to state legislative caucuses. In addition time will be spent serving as a liaison to TWS Chapters and State Sportsmens Caucuses. Further activities will depend upon the ability and interest of each intern and the need of TWS and NASC. POSITION: The Brad Rowse Memorial Wildlife Policy Fellowship is a full-time paid position and is available for a six-month duration, January to June and July to December 2006. Starting and ending dates are flexible. Interns are paid $ 1,000 per month. Applicants are notified of acceptance at least two weeks prior to their start date. Please indicate your availability when applying. QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires an individual with a high degree of proven motivation, initiative, maturity and responsibility. Interns must be capable of independent research and have well developed writing and communication skills. Individuals with a major in wildlife biology/natural resource management/conservation are preferred coupled with an interest in political science. Knowledge of how the federal and/or state government functions is helpful, but not essential. An interest in hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation is also desirable. A person need not be a student to qualify for this internship. COLLEGE CREDIT: TWS and NASC will cooperate with universities/colleges that offer credit for intern programs. However, it is the students responsibility to make all the arrangements for receiving academic credit.
