In most elevators, the "emergency stop" button would have prevented this, as
it usually includes either a brake or mechanical device that grabs something
so as to hold the elevator in place.

Now, here at UMess, the administration has removed all of these safety
devices in (IMHO) a misguided attempt at safety. It helps to be a state
agency and have another one inspecting your elevators, I guess....

Anyway, the question is simple, if the designers thought it necessary to
have an "emergency stop" button for emergencies needing it, and UMass
makes it so that you have to have a key to use this emergency device,
then what happenes to the poor souls who don't have keys? Like everyone?

Personally, I do not feel that UMass elevators are safe due to the
removal of this safety item.
