Is this really happening in Des Moines, Iowa? Or anywhere in Iowa? If the Canadian gun control laws were effective, then the crime rate involving firearms would be the same in all regions of Canada. It isn't. Nor is the crime rate dependent on the number of firearms available in a region. There is a regional disparity in the United States regarding firearms crime. Des Moines, Iowa does not have the same crime rate as New York City, or Fargo, N.D. Restrictive regulation of firearms will not regulate the values and morality of those inclined to commit criminal acts. They will ignore the firearms law as they ignore other laws. > Or if that is too much, then think of the choice as between a >system in which young people can safely gather in a circle to pray >and one in which guns are so easily obtained that even the most >gentle of our young can have their lives taken by a teen-ager with >a high-tech weapon. A small proportion of young people have not learned respect for others, for some this includes respect for human life. There have been teenage gangs in Canada who have beaten their victims to death, run them over with automobiles or set fire to them. They have boots, chains, knives, cars, gasoline, and matches. - they don't really need "high tech weapons". What they do need is a respect for other people and the law! Some young people think it is acceptable to break the law, whether it be "smoking a joint", breaking and entering, lying and fraud, etc. These kids think it only unacceptable to be caught. Gosh, they could be politicians in a few years. >IVAN T.
