Hello,
This message is directed at MIS's NNRP (USEnet reading) customers
and re-sellers. If you re-sell MIS's NNRP service, or your customers use
MIS NNRP service, please read. If you receive a feed from MIS's news
server, store and process your own news, this message is NOT for you.
If you do NOT purchase mis NNRP service and would like to either test or
purchase our NNRP service, please call MIS at 800-380-4638. (We are
priced very competitively.)
MIS has a complex news network. The server that is responsible for
storing and retrieving news articles will be replaced (hopefully) during
the week of the 1st. Prior to this, MIS is allowing all current NNRP
customers to connect and test the alpha-server. The current schedule is:
Currently, the server is in alpha-testing (we may drop the server at ANY
time, and it is NOT considered stable yet, we will NOT notify anyone prior
to dropping the server for changes).
Sometime early next week, the server will be placed into beta-testing. We
now place the server into a production environment, notifying customers
and scheduling outages.
5-7 days after the server is placed into beta with 0 service
interruptions, we will move the server to production. 2-3 days prior to
this, we will notify all customers.
The new server is currently absorbing news at 2.5-3 times the rate our
current reader is able to accept news. We are holding 3-4 times the
storage as well.
Attempting to use 2 news servers is not for the weak-hearted. Most news
readers will "remember" the article numbers from the old server, this will
make it appear that there are no new messages on the new server. You may
need to clear your .newsrc file to use the new server. Some news software
will handle this fine. We believe netscape handles it properly.
Where to connect to? news3.microserve.net on port 120, NOT the default
PORT 119. In netscape 3.x, you can specify a port by placing a :120 after
the host name (news3.microserve.net:120). in Netscape 4(communicator), it
prompts you for the port.
What do we want from you? Please send mail to noc@microserve.net
regarding your findings (good or bad) with this server. Please do NOT
contact us for support on how to set your news software to connect to this
news server.
What will you need to do when we switch over news servers? You will need
to send a message to your customers explaining that they may need to
clear their subscription lists. We will try to construct a complete
message and mail to this list, you may freely pass this letter onto your
customers. We will make it generic, covering as many news-readers as
possible. Your customers will NOT have to change to port 120, but they
may need to clear their subscription lists.
Good luck, please let us know your comments..

PS, for those of you experiencing slow-downs form the Harrisburg hub, we
will be making network change Monday to clear up this conjection. See
http://home.microserve.net and click on system or network status/info. I
believe there is more information there.
