Don't get me wrong I'm not an avid MS supporter however having a
standard for the computer industry is a good thing. Without some type
of standard we would be back to where we were in the 80's with
competing Hardware and Software standards that wouldn't interchange
with each other. People may hate Gates because he is a shrewd
businessman but if you were in his position and YOU owned a
multi-billion dollar company wouldn't YOU expand into every field your
product touched to get another piece of the pie - sure you would and
so would I, it's good business. Yes MS has released software with bugs
- lots of bugs - so has every other software manufacture. I don't know
of a single piece of software written that doesn't have at least one
bug. As far as money holding back computer technology well that's
bullshit - Intel and the rest of the hardware industry dump billions
into R&D and they're not shy about charging for it. If you want top of
the line equipment with the speed of a Mach 5 jet well you could
always buy yourself an Alpha based system they start at $4000 and use
their own OS. If you want a "non-standard" you can buy a MAC they're
excellent for graphics but plan to spend more time and money finding
programs for it. Just what would you recommend for an OS, A OS for the
masses, one that's easy to use, has programs of all kinds written for
it- none huh. Well what if we were to roll back the clock and
eliminate MS what OS had the potential to be what MS is now? Our egos
determine how expensive our computers are and we measure ourselves in
MHZ, GIGs, MBs, and KBPS. when our neighbor tells us he has a P-200
with 64mb RAM and an ISDN modem we feel inadequate and thats our fault
NOT Bill Gates, NOT Intels but ours. Anyone want to go back to the
80's I have a TRS-80 and an Atari you can have, of course you can't
use all that buggy software you keep asking all the software
developers to produce quicker and quicker.

"Of course that's just my opinion I could be wrong"
