What are the odds that every Windows user has experienced a General Protection Fault (GPF), Fatal Application Error (FAE) or some condition that caused Windows to just "freeze-up"? I'd say pretty good. The Pentone Group has recently released a new product that actually helps end users avoid these messages and straightens the learning curve as to why these messages appear. It is currently being used by individuals at AT&T, General Electric, Bell South and a myriad of consulting firms across America to name a few. The product is called ModPeek32. It is targeted for Windows 95 and NT. If you use ModPeek32 to view an executable file, it spills out a treeview-like hierarchical representation of the file dependencies that the executable requires to correctly operate. Not only will it tell you the DLL's, VBX's, OCX's and DRV's that it needs, it also reveals other rarely uncovered requirements like HLP, DAT, MDB, TXT, INI files that are also needed. Above is only the tip of the pyramid of information ModPeek32 provides. Some other features are the target operating system and version, the imbedded module version, product version, copyright and patent information and even the language that the executable was written in. ModPeek32 lets you select any branch of the interpreted hierarchy and displays the same information on these selected dependencies as well. Network administrators are using ModPeek32 to help them relocate entire applications to new directory structures across the network. They can easily narrow client workstation problems down to the ShareWare program that overwrote their delicately balanced DLL requirements. Programmers are using it to ensure they are using the correct versions of DLL's, VBX's and OCX's. They can easily spill out all of the files they need to create their final distribution set and avoid missing a file, sending out a wrong version of a DLL and so on. Quality Assurance personnel are using it to give meaningful feedback to programmers on the problems they encounter while testing in-house development results. They are finding that they now see a larger picture of why programs crash in testing. Tech Support personnel are arranging that their company distribute modified ModPeek32 versions slaved to their product for the end user's benefit when trouble calls come in. ODBC and OLE driver problems are quickly and efficiently revealed and solved leaving the customer satisfied in a shorter period of time. If you can use a product of this caliber in your organization, contact The Pentone Group at 407-381-9246 or anthonyf@nebula.ispace.com for more information.
