for HTML I use a text editor
for Java I use a text editor and JDK
for C++ I use a text editor and DJGPP
for almost every language I use a text editor
because then I am not stuck with platform specific helpers and am
"trained" by the software. Doing this I know that I can make code that
is truly portable to most other platforms.
When doing CGI (for my Apache) I like Jpython and Perl. I used TCL/TK
once for a network but only once. It was a pain trying to get the
server running. If you want to know about true programming power, start
with basic and then do C and assembly simultaneously while you start
C++. That will give you a good basis for many other things. I have
been programming for longer than 80% of the population has had a
personal computer. This is the path I would take if I could do it
again. Also, you might want to learn a little about Electrical
engineering (check your local library) so you can know where the
computer is coming from and be conscious of making programs that use up
less memory, are effiecient, and well constructed.
