I was 33 when my wife, 35 at the time, passed away, in 1989. : We had a child who was 8 at the time. She was disabled throughout her : adult life. I was, by necessity, the sole breadwinner for the latter : years of her life. The financial aspect was quite a strain, on top of her : worsening medical condition at the time. She was on CPP Disability : benefits. : When she passed away, I was able to collect survivor and orphan's : benefits. It came in handy, indeed. It was only under $300 then, and is a : bit over $400/month now. This is taxable income. : I'm on the other side of the fence, and while it is not greener, I do not : mind the gov't paying out benefits to any spouse, regardless of age. If : they, or their deceased spouse, paid into it, then they should certainly : get some money out of it. I suppose that this could be done. But would people think that increasing CPP premiums to cover the additional expense would be acceptable.
