2.0 Web News
2.1 Microsoft
All in all a quiet month on the Web front for both
Microsoft and Netscape after the all hype in August and
September. The fray should heat up again when Microsoft
releases the first beta of Internet Explorer 4. This is
rumoured to be happening on Oct. 24. One things for
sure IE3 has made big inroads into Netscape's domination
and shows no signs of stalling yet.
2.2 Netscape
Netscape got some good news this month, PC magazine
gave Netscape the Editor's Choice for best Webbrowser in a
close fight with Microsoft's IE3. However the magazine
also said the real winners are users who have both products.

4.0 Alberta On the Web
4.1 Immersive Imaging
From the home office in Medicine Hat comes the story of
new Alberta company that is a leader in immersive imaging.
What is immersive imaging, well for most of us that means
products like Apple Quicktime VR, but this is really beyond that.
It is an image that you can jump into and look around.
This new Alberta company is called Panospheric Imaging Engineering
Research Corporation (PIER). They are using a special type of camera
to produce something called Photobubbles. Bascially the way it works
is a special fish eye lens is used to take a 180 degree picture.
The camera is then swung around and another picture is taken of the
opposite 180 degrees. Special software is used to stitch the pictures
together creating a Photobubble. A plugin is available to view the
bubbles with Netscape and it is quite a view. The City of Medicine Hat
has used the technology on their website to let potential vistors
have a look at the city. Try it at http://www.city.medicine-hat.ab.ca/.
For more information on immersive imaging check out the PIER Corp.
website at http://www.piercorp.com. To download the Photobubble plugin
go to http://www.omniview.com/viewers/viewers.html.
If you know of an Alberta company that is involved in Internet
technology and you think it may be of interest to our readers, send us
an email at reidd@cadvision.com. We'll look into all suggestions
receieved.
5.0 Trivia Question of the Month:
This month's trivia question: An ISDN question.
In North America a PRI circuit has 23 B channels, how
many does one have in Europe?
First respondee with the correct answer will get
mentioned next month.
Last month's question was: What is the Quickening?
We had a lot of creative answers for this question last month,
but we finally were able to stump everyone. I'm not going to
give you the correct answer, instead here is a website to read
about the Quickening: http://www.artbell.com/art/quickeng.html
The name "The Quickening" was coined by late night
radio king Art Bell. Although Art Bell's show does not
appear on any Calgary Area stations, you can catch his
show via real audio, check out the Art Bell website at
www.artbell.com for the latest audio links. The current
link for Art Bell on Audionet is

The CalNet On The Iway WebSite is available online at:
http://www.cadvision.com/calnet.
The site features information on the upcoming CalNet Meeting,
the CalNet Helps features, The Web Of The Month, and lots of
other stuff.
