Ah, you exaggerate wildly. The Air Canada employee you mention was only the 
first known person to bring the HIV virus to North America...it was already 
spreading all over the place on other continents, and it would've arrived here 
sooner or later anyway.

Actually, a strong case can be made that it was _fortunate_  for the general 
populace that HIV got its first toehold in the gay community of North America. 
Had it first started spreading as a heterosexual  affliction--as it had in 
other areas of the world--it is very likely that the cause of the disease and 
the knowledge of how it is transmitted would've taken considerably longer to 
isolate. As it was, the limited initial spread in North America and the 
accompanying logical assumptions made it _easier_ to learn about the disease.
