2.0 Web News
The Next Internet Killer App:
In the world of Internet, new applications and services
seem to popup on a daily basis. While many may be plugins that no
human will ever use, there is a new service on the IWAY that may just
be the next Big Thing. I am talking about PointCasting.
Traditional broadcasting bombards us daily with a deluge
of information that we must wade through to get to the juicy bits that
interest us. PointCasting changes all that.
This new service allows one to select the news, sports,
and weather that we want to see, and beams it directly to our
desktops via the Internet. And it does with a slick, easy to use
interface that is a pleasure to work with. A creation of PointCast
Inc. of Cupertino, California, PointCasting is the most significant
new service to come across my desktop since the original web browser
Mosaic.
The volume of news that is available through this one
service is just amazing, and comprehensive. It would take a whole lot
of pointing and clicking around the web, not to mention time to
acquire the same amount of information. I believe we have in
PointCasting the first service that is a real challenge to the daily
newspaper, the nightly TV news broadcast, and other forms of news
media. This service is a competitive advantage for anyone who has it,
and thorough the power of the IWAY, we can all have it.
PointCasting has major advantages for advertisers. Companies
create attractive websites in the vague hope customers will PULL out
the advertising weaved into their pages. PointCasting allows companies
to PUSH their advertisements, in your face again much like television.
So how much can we expect to pay for this service, how about
nothing, it's free. The PointCast application has a small window that
advertising is beamed thorough while it is open. The service is paid
for by advertisers much like network television.
PointCast has also just announced a Server product for
companies that use IntraNet in their corporate infrastructure. The
PointCast I-Server as it is called allows companies to Pointcast
internal company news to their employees as well as the public
information already available through a single interface.
PointCasting is available for download both as a full
package, and a Netscape plugin at http://pioneer.pointcast.com. My
advice is to go for the full package, it's free, very easy to install,
and works great. Give PointCast a try, I think you will find it
quickly becomes addictive.
