In this newsgroup perhaps the TOP 60 lists about Computer Language,
CASE and RAD could be the most interesting

SoftBase is a web page that has a selection from over 19,500 mostly
software but also some hardware products and around 11,700 suppliers.
Around 200-300 products and almost as many suppliers are changed or
added each month. The information has been collected since 12 years.

Top 5000 suppliers
Top 3000 shareware/freeware
Top 60 lists in each group with Payware (Commercialware), Shareware,
Freeware and some Hardware:

Accounting, Add on, Antivirus, Architecture, Astronomy, Barcodes,
Backup, CAD, CASE or RAD, CDROM, Children, Communication,
Database, Decision, Drawing, DTP, Economy, Educational, Educational
Games, Electronics, Fax , Files, Fonts, Forms, Freeware, Ham Radio,
Hardware, Home, Hypertext, Image, Information, Integrated, Internet,
Computer Language, Macintosh PC related Products, Mail, Maps,
Mathematics, Medicine, Menus, Icons, Multimedia, Network, OCR,
Organization- and Flow- Charts, OS, OS/2, PIM, Presentations, Printer,
Project, Religion, Spreadsheet, Special, Security, Selfstudy, School,
Sales Tools, Shareware, Sports, Statistics, US Taxes, Technical,
Translation, Human Language, Unix, Linux, Utility, Video, Voice,
Windows 3/95/98/NT, Word Processor, Y2K

Every product can belong to one or more of over 70 categories like
Mail, Windows, Communication etc. Normally a product belongs to
between 3 and 5 categories. The rating is based on sales, downloads,
editors choice, literature references and ratings in different well
known computer magazines, age of information, type of OS and other
information available mostly on the Internet.

The rating is not based on the single category alone that a TOP
60-list belongs to. The TOP 60-lists are not to be taken as an
absolute advice but just as a general information giving the reader an
idea about what to choose. SoftBase has less of games especially those
involving magic and/or jinns and ghosts. There is also very little of
economical applications using mainly interest. Less of music, sex,
gambling and national man-made laws except taxes. Less of to a certain
extent man-made religions.
