I don't know that this is the correct forum to ask this question but I not
having any luck figuring this out.

I'm developing an intranet that accesses files in Word, Excel, Viso, and
other window's based programs. The servers are windows based servers.

The files are created and maintained by many 'low tech' individuals so if I
ask them to create their own pdf files there will be mistakes.

Here's what I'm looking for: I want a program or script that will go to
many predefined servers and files of various types and create a pdf file on
another server with the push of a button.

I know Adobe will do this if they make postscript files but I want to
automate that step as well. Can anyone send me in the right direction?

Adobe has an online PDF creator - you get 3 tries for free, and a
subscription costs $99 a year for unlimited files. The only downside is
that if a PDF file can't be created in less than 10 minutes, it times
out. But we've been able to do files 50 pages long that way without a
problem.

If you're really hardcore, you could achieve scripted/unattended
creation of PDF file using Apache FOP (see
http://xml.apache.org/fop/index.html). I have done this before and it
works well, but you must be willing to learn a bit about Java and XML.
