>> 1. Software Developers Network Membership Status
We now have 170 members from 105 companies. On a $0.00 budget!
It's great to see the Edmonton region software companies getting
together, networking, and learning new things.
We're still getting away without a Board and stuff, but as the SDN
grows, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find large enough
rooms
and stuff without paying. When we get to a point where some money
needs
to be exchanges, we will have to formalize things a bit. I'll do my
best to delay this as long as possible. - Geoff Falconar
>> 2. Feb 17 Software Developers Network Meeting Report
We had 56 people attend the recent meeting which was held at Advanced
Micro Design on the south side. There was standing room only! The
meeting was very upbeat and positive. Great feedback so far. Meeting
started at 4:30 and ended at about 7:15. Some people say it was too
long, but most say it didn't seem long enough. Don't worry, we won't
strive to make them longer.
The presentations from our keynote speakers seemed to have been VERY
well received by everyone. Wayne Karpoff of Myrias Software
(http://www.myrias.com) shared many excellent ideas on how to be more
successful at raising investment capital, and he really clarified the
different types of investment suitable for companies in different
stages
of growth. Wayne extends an offer to any SDN member to contact him if
you would like to find out more about this topic. Contact Wayne at
Myrias at 463-1337, wtk@myrias.com .
Lawyer extraordinare, Tom O'Reilly from Field Atkinson Perraton gave a
real eye-opening presentation on protecting your Intellectual Property
(IP) and making it look good to investors.
There were many 'ooohs' and 'awes' from the audience as Tom explained
the truth about software copyright laws, IP ownership, trademarks,
etc.
(ie: if you hire an employee or a contractor to develop software for
your company, unless you have very specific contract terms included,
that employee or consultant will most likely own the copyright, IP, or
other claims to the software!), and many other things that so many of
us
software business people take for granted.
Tom O'Reilly's firm, Field Atkinson Perraton
(http://www.fieldlaw.com),
paid for the pizza and beer! Many thanks to them. EDE bought the
chips
and pop.
Madenta (http://www.madenta.com) made a presentation on their "Active
Access" standard, being adopted by Microsoft, for developing software
to
allow accessibility by persons with physical disabilities. About 25
people went next door to Madenta after the SDN meeting for an
interesting presentation and tour.
>> 3. Technical Presentations for upcoming SDN meetings
Still having difficulty finding someone to make technical oriented
presentations. I DO NOT need ideas for topics unless you also know of
a
person who will make a presentation on the topic. If you have an idea
which would be of reasonably broad interest, AND someone who could
present it, contact Geoff Falconar, mailto:gfalconar@ede.org , phone
917-7662.
>> 4. Venture Capital Investment Prospects Wanted
The Capital Region Innovation Centre is looking for companies who are
seeking venture capital. Contact Brad Guthrie at 917-7669,

Contact Frank Veeken, 414-5792, frankve@altius.ca .
>> 6. Software Partnering Event in Chicago

partners in the Chicago market. Last year's event had over 300
software
executives. All costs are responsibility of the participant. Contact
David Antoniuk at Alberta Economic Development, 427-6618,
david.antoniuk@gov.ab.ca .
>> 7. "inPARALLEL" Software Testing Program
Myrias Software <http://www.myrias.com> is looking for edmonton
software
development companies who would like to try out their new "inPARALLEL"
software and provide feedback on it. Please contact Wayne Karpoff

>> 8. Journal E-Commerce Feature - Contacts Wanted

impacted by e-commerce, has big plans for e-commerce, or companies
currently heavily involved with e-commerce.

>> 9. IT Partnering Event on March 24
Proactive Technology Trading <http://www.proactive.ca> would like to
invite you to participate in a one day event, March 24 at the Sheraton
Grande Edmonton, to introduce Alberta Information Technology companies
to larger or multinational IT companies that are looking for
suppliers.
This event is patterned on the successful events coordinated by the
Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) in their
administration of Industry Canada's Supplier Development Program.
The event, which is sponsored by Alberta Economic Development, ITAC
and
the Alberta Information Technology Association (AITA), will allow each
potential supplier to make a short presentation on their company
followed by meetings between interested companies. Each company that
is
interested in participating will be asked to fill out a description on
their company. These descriptions will be sent to the larger Canadian
or multinational IT companies. The companies that are selected by the
larger Canadian or multinational IT companies will be asked to
participate in the event, thereby ensuring a level of interest and
value
in participating.
You must contact Daryl Johnston at proactive IMMEDIATELY to get
involved. (403) 262-7885, djohnston@proactive.ca .

>> 11. Model 7/25
EDE has integrated "Model 7/25" into their business plan and mission.
This means that we now FOCUS on building our knowledge based industry
from its current 7% of GDP to 25% by 2010. Software/Multimedia is one
of the few industry sectors targeted in this plan.
Contact Geoff Falconar for further details. 917-7662,
