In article <1992Apr9.050944.737@cs.mcgill.ca> storm@cs.mcgill.ca (Marc WANDSCHNEIDER) writes: > It would appear that, in general, universities train CS students >to learn about computer science, and not 'how to program in language X'. >This is probably the best way of going about things, as learning a >language is really a matter of getting a book and reading it. A lot of what universities teach prepares the student for teaching and research in the subject. Sometimes this directly conflicts with a student's goal of getting vocational training for a high-paying job, and a corporation's hope that the student will be turned out ready to mesh into the organization and start cranking out code, designs, mods or documentation equal in value to the salary being paid within weeks of hiring. The "kinda sad" part is that the student trained to think in general and with a broad knowledge of a subject is going to be a lot more productive over the long term, after the product which needs development of support right now is history. But try telling that to the manager whose whole life is devoted to the next quarterly report and to this year's production goals.
