I have acrobat webcapture showing up in my stats. The system is new to me so I researched it and it turns out that its set up to capture web pages so you can view them locally on your computer. Why would someone want to do this and is my sensitive and copyrighted information being put at risk.....is someone using webcapture for illegitimate or malicious intent? There is no reason that I can think of as to why my site has been captured 5 times in two weeks. MY site is php and database driven...would it still work locally? Would this be to steal m copyright images? Or hack my site?

Acrobat Capture is a separate product from Acrobat, for the purpose of large-scale conversion and OCR of images. Webcapture is a plug-in and a feature of the Acrobat product. Anyone with Acrobat can use it to convert a site to a PDF and handle that as any other PDF. Anyone viewing a web site is actually downloading it to their temp files as passed by your host server, and then viewing the files on their computer. Webcapture just takes that one step further; in a way, it is similar to any indexing software (e.g. Google) that grabs information from a site. Maybe it is useful or popular site that someone wants to examine at length. In any case, Acrobat Webcapture cannot change it on your host server. As to copyright issues - anyone could view the site in a browser and automatically the files are saved (at least temporarily) on their computer. Violations come from re-use, not from the use as you intended of people viewing the site.

" Violations come from re-use, not from the use as you intended of people viewing the site. " The way I see it, as I'm sure most web developers do, is that Acrobat Capture program is "reusing" our content in a manner not consistent with it's intended use. We disseminate content to be delivered via a web browser, and that is our intentions...If we intended to give visitors a printable copy that they could take wherever they roam, we would publish a book. Reproduction of copyrighted material is prohibited. When a browser temporarily caches content the copyright is not breached. Adobe Capture violates the copyright by leeching the temporary cache files, reproducing them, and then saving them in a different directory than the intended temporary cache.

Do you also disable the Print capability for every user with a browser on a machine with access to a printer? How do you address Fair Use?

Print it all you want... You can even copy my images. My concern was that if someone could duplicate my site in full locally on their computers then they can do all kinds of nasty things to my hard work. In the past I have had a few of my sites attacked in many ways and I was worried that this webcapture is just another way of steeling from me. I've had people hijack my site and change all of the links in my ecommerce set up to there own and take my money. I've had people rip my site off SEO wise as well to the point that if I ran a query on my key words all of my stuff would show up top page, but it wasnt my site. I have used my htaccess file to disallow webcature.. 2 different versions of it and so far so good. Not even sure if it is the same thing... pretty sure it is a robot and not a human. SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; WebCapture 1.0; Windows)" bad_bot SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; WebCapture 2.0; Windows)" bad_bot SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "WebCapture" bad_bot <Limit GET POST> order allow, deny allow from all deny from env=bad_bot </Limit> Just a few out of 80 or so banned bots.
