have several pages of CMYK PDFs for offset printing. ideally, i would like to combine all the pages into one PDF document for the printing house, but i'm concerned about lossy quality in doing so. each of these CYMK PDFs were produced using Illustrator CS4. the total size of the files before combining is 16MB. when i combine the pages in Acrobat Pro 9 the resulting file is only 5MB. after combining, i save my new combined .PDF as "Adobe PDF Files". there doesn't seem to be any detailed options for compression other than being able to choose "Smaller", "Default" or "Larger" file sizes. i've selected Larger file sizes, which states: Larger Files Size: Suitable for quality printing on desktop printers. Uses High Quality Adobe PDF settings. PDF files in the list retain original file size and quality. May result in large file size. but clearly the .PDFs are not retaining their original file size in this case. in fact, out of curiosity i've tried saving them as all 3 different sizes, and they're all 5MB! is this a known issue? i couldn't find anything in the preferences which allowed me to change saved quality.

In the Combine dialog, if you choose the middle icon (Default File Size), you can control the conversion using Acrobat's Convert to PDF preference (Acrobat > Preferences > Convert to PDF). The format where you can control the conversion are listed. Choose one, and click Edit Settings. Not all supported formats have settings, however.

It is unless you are using the "smallest" size option. The file size can go down when combining as there is potential to re-use document resources such as fonts, images, etc. <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WS2C405211-BB6F-4fba-89AC-3B642DD7EF70.html>
