It's seems strange to read someone suggesting filming something for 'real' as opposed to creating it digitally. When I was at college I always had to find solutions such as those Navarro mentions, we had no After Effects then.

I can remember nearly choking to death in my tiny blacked-out bedroom as I tried to create a snowstorm with a can of underarm deodorant (I spent hours in their almost passing out as I tried to get the 'right' shot!)

My bedroom doubled as my studio back then and it was so small in there I had to smash my bed-base to pieces so I could construct a set. Boy how times change!

Anyway cdiddy, give the 'real' approach a shot, even if it's only for the memories.
