People don't seam to realize that mp3 files use mpeg technology which doesn't lend itself to dynamic scrubing. It's a highly compressed format that has to be decompressed for random frames on the fly. Don't blame AE as much as blame the file format. If you're rendering out the audio, the audio would be recomperssed anyway. Just bring it in as an aiff and save youself a lot of quality issues.
