smoke coming off of text effect.. help?

im adding text to skin in a treated photograph to make it look like it was burned in. I got the PS part down but I cant seem to make the smoke come off the text without it looking totally lame.

Any ideas, specifically.. Not just, oh use this plugin.. hehe thanks!
