Make sure that you (in XP) go to control panel->sound and Audio Devices->
Then in the volume tab you will see a box that reads: device volume
Click on the Advanced... button within that "Device Volume" Box

Then Volume Control window pops up- within that window go to
options->properties and in the box that says "adjust volume for"
make sure the drop down box is set to playback and ensure that both mic and line in options are checked if one or both aren't- click on the check boxes to enable them. now you should be able to hear what your playing while recording to Audition

I used this routine to set up a headset mic and it worked well

Hope this guide helps
Good Luck
