The previous poster clearly didn't read your final paragraph...
Now when I stop recording and playback I can hear it fine, but not while
recording. So I have the track ins and outs routed to the right places
(outs to realtek HD, ins to USB codec), my levels are up in the control
panel, I've done everything I know, is there something I missing? Please
help
Unfortunately in AA1.5 I don't think that you can monitor like this at all - you'd need AA3.0 and ASIO4ALL to do that trick directly. What normally happens in terms of monitoring with earlier versions (up to AA2.0) is that monitoring is arranged as a direct path through the sound device you are using - and in this case, you simply can't arrange a direct path from one device to another within the software. AA3.0 does it with a very slight processing delay, but it provides the monitoring path itself, and this is what AA1.5 simply doesn't have, always relying on an external one.
Clearly it's not impossible to achieve - I've recently seen a laptop that could route signals from an external input-only USB adaptor into the internal sound chip for monitoring purposes, but as I recall, this had to be set up carefully, and involved having the OS set to use both devices as the appropriate default ones, one for recording and the other for playback. This is the Settings>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices box, in the 'audio' tab. Whilst you are there, go to the 'sounds' tab and switch it to 'no sounds' - because this can, and almost certainly will, screw up your playback at some point!
