      Could you tell me where this "one channel" option is?




When you click on the 'In' button (that probably says 'In 1') directly above the FX, you get the option to specify exactly what sort of track you are going to record. By default, I belive it should say 'stereo', and this sounds like it's certainly the case for you...

      Does the MOTU default mono sources such as mic to one side of a stereo

Yes, that's exactly what it does. If you plug the mic into channel 1, and select MOTU 1&2 to record from, then this mic will be recorded on the left channel. If you do as Craig suggests, which involves selecting the left input, as I described above, then you will get a single channel recording. The pan pot isn't relevant in this case - it only pans to the analog bus outputs (just like it says when you hover the mouse over it), and makes no difference to the FireWire outputs, which are tapped off before the internal bus mixer. Now, I'll grant you that this isn't crystal clear in the manual, but it is certainly implied...

The purpose of this is to enable the Traveler to act as a standalone mixer, and under these circumstances, you would need to be able to pan a mono source around the stereo field. But if you are recording this source on it's own, you don't need to. You record it as mono, and just enable the Pan controls in Audition, and then you can pan it across your stereo soundfield anyway!
