Help: uneven sound when recording

I am trying to record acoustic instrumental sound into Adobe Audition 1.5 using a line-in preamplified mic.

Problem: After a couple successful sound tests, the sound from about the third take on is corrupted. The wave form sits at silent until it picks up a loud note, the note cuts in (I lose the beginning of it), and then dies too quickly back to silent. It almost looks as if it's been nuked by an overactive noise reduction pass. It sounds like 'wa wa'.

I have tested all the hardware involved. The mic works with other devices, and the sound card on my computer is fine. I'm wondering if it might be an issue of memory buffer. I cranked up the buffer in the system settings, but that didn't make a difference. I currently have only 1.5 GB of free space on my computer. I am assuming that should be enough...

Does anybody have any ideas of what could be wrong? I have no idea what to try next.

I don't think it's Audition, although you can test this quite simply by making a recording with Windows Sound Recorder. This uses the same dll and api structure to record as Audition does; ie, the OS. If it all works okay with WSR, then it may well be something Audition is doing, but as I said, it doesn't sound like it at all on the face of it, and Audition isn't exactly noted for causing this sort of problem...

If it's level-related, it sounds far more like the hardware than anything, although it's also quite possible that a screwed driver could account for this - they can do weird things too. And at the moment, that's where I'd be looking if this turns out to be consistent - the sound device driver. Buffer problems tend to manifest themselves as clicks and pops as a rule, or whole sections missing, but not as level-related problems, so at least initially they don't seem to be implicated.

Thank you for your response!
I think you're right. I was on the phone with Dell for a while, and we thought we had ruled out the hardware, but now that I'm testing it further, I can still make the same problem happen in WSR. I'll go back to considering the mic and sound card, etc.
I don't have very much experience with this yet. Thanks for the advice.
