I tried the reinstall w/save user settings with two identical machines. One I checked BSD the other I left it off. The one with worked, the one without did not. It was not a pain free fix because it broke my Quark, Safari, and Macromedia Applications. One crash while loading the 10.3.4 to 10.3.9 combo update fixed Safari(2nd attempt worked), the other apps I had to reloaded.
