I have the VC4 (from CS4 Premium) installed on a network drive set as a server. WinXP Pro systems. On the local machine, I have Adobe Drive. When I click on a file in explorer and click "check out", nothing seems to happen. (InDesign file). The explorer panel where it says "check in, check out, version... " says "cancel check out..." Where does the file go. My expectation is that the file is checked out to my local machine. Is this not possible? From within InDesign, I can open the file from the mounted network drive, but then I'm working across the network. If I disconnect from the Adobe Drive (networked drive), then InDesign shuts down. If I cannot check out a file stored via Version Cue to a local drive, then it seems Version Cue will not be viable for our environment. Working across a network, especially on large files or multiple files really slows things down. Where can I get more information on using Version Cue in a workgroup where each user needs to work from individual local drives? Thanks, RPP

Hi r pollack, You seem to be a victim of Adobe's failure to recall Version Cue CS4 and their failure to warn people NOT to use it. If you use Adobe Drive to access the Version Cue CS4 server, your InDesign file is mysteriously stuffed in to a .info file somewhere in the Adobe Drive cache folder. You cannot access it (outside of the Adobe Drive system) or retrieve it once there (and there is no where else you can put it while using Adobe Drive). One option is to "Save As..." to another place, but what's the point in using Version Cue then? If you disconnect from the server while using Adobe Drive, you will be unable to work on any of the files locally, and any progress made will be inaccessible until you reconnect to the server. Adobe Drive *IS* unusably slow. The architecture seems to swap bits across the connection constantly instead of storing the file data on your local (faster) hard-drive and synchronizing when you say. My recommendation is to either use Subversion (more of a programmer's manual source-control system), or use Bridge CS3 to access your Version Cue CS4 server (I'm about to post more on that for others...) Please tell Adobe how displeased you are for their lack of caring. thanks, JP

@r pollack just drag or "save as" to any local folder and if files are in shape to be hand over, check the old version out on the Version Cue server via Adobe Drive integration and replace it. A new Version is created. @ Jon Bitpusher Paul so, where is the advantage to subversion here? Does it have any integration into Adobe apps like InDesign or Photoshop? No. Any visual browser like Bridge to see thumbnails (for files which can render thumbnails)? Not as far as I know. Using Bridge CS3 is a good idea. Maybe. Except the needed workaround of checking out all files before editing. I guess it is even possible to use Bridge CS3 in parallel to a volume mounted via Drive. But I never tried that one.
