How to move VC server/projetcs to another computer?

Hello, How can I move my Version Cue CS3 database to another computer? I have copied server and projects backups into the Backups folder, but they do not show in the backup list, so can't be restored. Documentation seems to indicate that projects, at least, can be restored, but I haven't been able to figure out how. Note: If you want to move a project, first decide whether to back it up (so that all past versions are also moved) or to export it (so that only the current versions of project files are moved). Ideally, I'd like to restore the server backup and the projects backup onto the new computer. Any help is appreciated. -Jim

About two months ago, I did what you describe. On the new computer, make sure that Version Cue is running AND your backups are NOT on that computer. If the backups are already in the Vc backups folder of the new computer, stop Vc, move the backups, and restart Vc. While Vc is running, copy the backups to your new server's Vc backups folder. There is a "File Mirror" service running in conjunction with the Vc server that maintains the link integrity between where Vc thinks the files are and the OS knows the files are. (See bottom of this post for a nifty trick to illustrate this service.) Stop and restart Vc. In Vc Admin, go to the Projects page => Project Backups tab, your project backups should be there. DON'T restore the projects yet. Check the Advanced Functions page of Vc Admin. Your server backups should be visible now as well. If not, repeat the steps above, but substitute "server" for "project". Restore your Server backup first, and then project backups if needed. Nifty trick: Vc "really" thinks your backups are in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Server\backups\server regardless of how you've configured the "Version Cue Folders". 1) Open a file browser to display the contents of: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Server\backups\server 2) Open a second file browser to display the Server Backups folder as you've configured it in Version Cue. In my case, that folder is on a different physical drive at: J:\Vc Backups\backups\server. 3) Create a new text file in either browser window. The "File Mirror Service" will instantly 'teleport' the file to the other folder's browser window. It's this "service", running only when Vc is running, that I believe caused Version Cue to acknowledge the existence of my previous backups after installing on a new computer. (I acknowledge that I do not have intimate source code knowledge of Version Cue, and the above may be pure 'puter voodoo, but it worked for me.)

Sergei, This worked well. Thanks very much. One additional step I needed to perform was to change security permissions on the backup files. Once I copied the backup files to the proper location on the new server and stated Vc, I noticed that VersionCue.log flagged some "access denied" errors for the project backup file. I changed the security on the backup files to inherit permissions from the parent folders, and all went well. Thank you! -Jim
