Adobe,

Please let the users know if we should wait for a patch to Version Cue 4 or seek other solutions to version control.

Currently, if working in Fireworks or Dreamweaver (or any program other than Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign) on a file that is in version cue, upon saving it DELETES ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS and sets the file as a "New file".

This is CRITICALLY BROKEN and is HARMFUL if used -- Adobe: you must RECALL this software immediately!

Please do not allow users to install it!!!!!!!!!!!

(I can hardly believe that 4 months after release, I was allowed to install it, upgrade all of our studio's projects from VC CS3, and immediately start LOSING DATA to VC CS4. What a miserable failure! Very unprofessional and negligent!)

Hi Jon, the reason why you are seeing such a behaviour is the fact that non-adobe drive integrating products like Fireworks and Dreamweaver require that you first check-out the files via Bridge or the Explorer / Finder context menu if you want to edit them. If you do so, then your revisions will not be lost. Applications that deeply integrate with Adobe Drive do the checkout of the files automatically once they start editing and also check-in the files when saving.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm very surprised that Adobe would release VC4 like this.

Basically, Version Cue CS4 users must REMEMBER (without any warnings) to check-out all FW/DW/non-Adobe file types or else overwrite all previous versions? At least Microsoft Windows asks "Are you sure..." before it deletes your files.

I can hardly believe this got past the first project review at Adobe--sounds too insane to be true. Is Adobe planning on patching Version Cue CS4 any time soon?

Please Adobe, at least bring back a sync button so that our designers don't need to hunt for which GIFs/PNGs/JPGs need to be checked out/in when making changes.

VC4 is a massive failure, it's not simply about workflow problems, it's also about critical bugs. As I type this my Adobe Drive has randomly disconnected itself again, and refuses to reconnect to the server. I will again have to delete my CS4ServiceManager directory and lose anything that I hadn't yet checked in. I try to check-in now the second I put anything onto VC4 (which is a stupid waste of my time), but sometimes it disconnects WHILE I am checking things in!!!!!!

@nocfury:

That sounds frustrating!

Just so you know, I haven't experienced the disconnect issue like you describe--just the other problems (that are known issues at Adobe). We're running mostly Vista x64 machines with the server on a Vista x32 machine.

However, we did notice at our studio that if the server is disconnected, and a workstation tries to start-up, then Bridge CS4 will crash upon startup and we're literally unable to run it until the server comes online.

This is because Bridge CS4 tries to open a directory located on the Adobe Drive (Version Cue CS4) server upon startup and crashes if not found. (I hope adobe patches Bridge CS4 to try ANY other local directory if it cannot connect to the VC CS4 server.)

So in that case, you're right: all files that have not been checked in to Version Cue CS4 are in peril until the local Adobe Drive is able to start up. Adobe should perhaps allow Adobe Drive to start-up even if it cannot connect to the server so that the users' files can be recovered.

In any case, I don't think Adobe is going to mention any coming patches/fixes until the day they show up on the updater, as a matter of policy.
