VC - to do or not to do...

Hi...

Am on WinXP CS3. Single machine, single user...

Question is, do i need Version Cue enabled or not?

Saw a video on VC CS4... it was talking of setting up a VC server... i can understand the advantages there, when multiple folks are working on a big project.

But I'm a single user. Currently VC is in the (Windows) Services but set to 'Manual'. IOW, not started. The program is not showing up under the Start Menu > Programs > Adobe Design Premium CS3 > path.

Suggestions would be useful... should i remove it, enable it, remove from Ill / PS prefs (currently enabled in both).

Basically what, if any, purpose would it serve for me?

TIA and Cheers!

JJ

Hi Jay,
Version Cue will not appear in programs. You may access is only via your control panel.
Your advantage as a single user may be, that you will be able to save versions of your work.
Say you have a layout in InDesign (as I do not know what you're doing) and your customer wants a lot of changes.
So you save your work often, and before closing it (and maybe in between too) you check in a version.
- you will have all versions available via Version Cue, best to browse them via Bridge. And if ever you need to return to an older version you can restore it.
- Version Cue CS3 only saves the difference between versions, means, even though you have all versions available , you do not need so much space to store them as you'd need if saving all versions as single files in your local file system or a network volume.
- it will be easier to track files.
- via Bridge you have the ability to browse all versions with thumbnails.
- via Version Cue you can start PDF reviews making it is easy to gather feedback from customers or colleagues.

Removing from any application preferences won't change much, the integrated technique will stay. only uninstall with the suite installer will save you some space. not much though.

Hope that helped

Markus, hi...

Thanks for the explanation... it's pretty much clear but a little more clarification would help me to understand it better.

Main programmes i use are Illustrator and Photoshop (and Dreamweaver). So far, what i've been doing is saving each version as a new file...

project 01a.ai
project 01b.ai
project 01b new.ai
... or .psd, etc.

OK... just saw the Check In option in the file menu. So, in effect, i create a new file... ProjecX.ai (or .psd) and save.

Make changes and check it in as ProjectX-a.ai (or .psd). And so on...

So, now, all the ProjectX versions are actually, one file with different variations and permutations. These can be viewed (and opened) through Bridge. The one i finally decide on can be saved as an ai/psd master (different name of course) or exported as a PDF or whatever...

Have i got it right?

Advantages:

1/ Smaller file size with all variations packed into the same file. Hence, no 3 x 150MB files but one, say 180MB file with 3 variations

2/ All variations are in the same file, sequentially displayed. So, one doesn't have to hunt around for new a, new ab, new ca, etc. and then crosscheck dates, etc. to be sure i have the right file.

Have i got the gist of it?

Thanks again,

Cheers...

Hi Jay,
yes, you got it.
That's what makes Version Cue a helpful tool for some of us.

Unfortunately Dreamweaver is not integrated like PS is, there you need to save things via webDAV (VC Server can be connected that way), or just save your changes made in DW to your local VC repository and check them in when finished for the day via Bridge.
All files you put in \Documents\Version Cue\ will appear at once in Bridge as "Local only" or "New Files" (not sure at the moment which term is correct) and can be checked in. This is how not VC integrated apps from Adobe and third party apps can be handled via VC too.

oh, and putting files with same name and filetype into \Documents\Version Cue\, will be recognized as "Local changes" and you can check in a new version of already managed files after wards too.

Hi Markus...

Many thanks for your replies and explanations... Now, i guess, i'll just have to get around to biting the bullet!

Cheers and thanks again!
