.ai files created with Illustrator 9 and later are PDF files
.ai files created with Illustrator 7 and 8 are EPS files
.ai files from earlier versions are also EPS files but can't be processed by AGS

on how to tell the difference-- to determine if you want to use convertEPSToRaster or convertPDFToRaster on a particular file.
