1. You can set the hyphenation options for each paragraph of text in your Photoshop template. You can turn it off completely, turn it off for words less than x characters, etc. AGS will use those settings.

In some situations, using Photoshop's "No Break" character formatting may work. See:

It doesn't work well with long runs of text.

2. I don't know about guidelines but there's another possiblity. AGS will warn you when the text didn't fit. See the Knowldege base article at:

In your API code, you could guess or calculate how much text will fit, check for the warning, change the amount of text and/or the font size, try again, check again, etc.
