I've not seen that error but here's a couple of guesses.

- Maybe the 1.5 pdf overlay uses a feature not supported by the main 1.4 pdf.
- Maybe one of the PDFs is damaged. (Try a save as from Acrobat on both files to see if that changes anything)

Try doing the overlay in Acrobat and see if that works or generates a similar error.
