SVG to PDF

Just wondering, before installing the trial version of Adobe Graphics server and proving that it works to my company, also having no experience with Adobe Graphics Server at all.

How easy is it to generate an PDF or JPG file from an SVG that sits on the server, is it 6 months of learning, 6 months trying to get it right, or is it more or is it quite understandable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Richard

It depends on your requirement. If you just want a crappy thumbnail and don't care about color, resolution, and formatting, it will probably take you minutes to a hour. In my case, I am not that lucky. I spent over a month and finally concluded AGS is not able to do what I need. It was as simple as converting an SVG to PDF, but if you talk about color spec., fonts, resolution, text formatting at the same time, AGS is not designed for that (SVG content I mean).

So, basically, after spending 4-5k on AGS, you get a pretty crap graphic that you cant read or is useless?

What I am trying to do is, we have a dynamically generated SVG (its a CAD drawing with lines, fonts etc..) and want to press a button and creates a PDF for user to download.

I dont want to spend time and money if at the end of the day its not worth it, at 4-5k for the software, i would hardly think its that rubbish, can anyone else show an example of results or post experiences.

Thanks a lot

Richard

Of course I didn't spend that money, I was testing on the trial version.

I remember I've seen someone was trying to produce a PDF version of floor plan (in SVG), so it's very similar to your project, but he was posting a problem which I can't remember what it's about. You should do a forum search. Anyway, AGS is very limited on SVG manipulation, you'd better check out with Adobe before you purchase it.

Richard,

If you have some programming and XML background, you should be able to do a proof of concept using the Command line interface to AGS in a few hours.

- Install a trial of AGS
- Open the Samples folder at {your install location}/Samples
- Look at the Samples ReadMe--especially page 6 on running the samples
- Run the convertSVGToPDF.xml and convertSVGToRaster.xml samples
- Modify the sample code to use your file and modify attributes to meet your needs.
(See the documention for these two commands in the command reference.)

AGS cannot generate Press-ready PDFs from SVG in many situations. (SVG's roots are as a Web format.)
- The output PDF or JPEG will be RGB. However, output PSDs can be converted within AGS to CMYK
- You won't have fine typographic control over the output (leading, kerning, tracking, etc.)
- Modifying the structure of SVG files within AGS can be difficult.
- Images embedded in the SVG, will be Web quality rather than Press quality.

If you don't need Press-ready PDFs, AGS sounds like a good fit Some quick tests using the trial version, should let you answer that.

Great, web format required not press ready so thanks for that bit of info, also do not need to change anything either.

Hello Richard,

If you simply want to convert SVG to PDF, there are other tools out there that you can use. One of the widely used ones is Batik (open source) - it has this pdf transcoder for getting SVG to PDF, and some other transcoder - SVG to JPEG, etc.

One thing to note is that CEF fonts embedded in the SVG files are not supported - hence you need to have the specified fonts installed.

Regards,

Allan
