Remove sRGB profile from PDF (generated from SVG)

Hi, I am generating a PDF from an SVG file, using the <ConvertSVGToPDF> command. The command embeds an icc profile (sRGB) to the output PDF. I would like to be able to remove the icc profile attached to the resultant PDF, so that the RGB colour values in the PDF are not adjusted according to the sRGB profile. I have tried using <AssignProfile profile="none">, but this does not work because the PDF is not a raster input (converting the PDF to raster is not an option either). I guess I could overwrite the sRGB icc file with a neutral profile, so that instead of the sRGB profile being attached to the PDF through <ConvertSVGToPDF>, a neutral profile is. But I don't know how to go about creating a profile that does nothing to colour values! Does anyone know any way using Document Server that I could remove the profile attached to the PDF? or create and attach a neutral(?) profile to the PDF that makes no changes to the RGB values in the PDF? Cheers Joe

There isn't a way in ADS to change the color profile of a PDF and SVG is natively an sRGB format. 1. There are third-party "Pre-Press" tools that can change the color profiles in a PDF. 2. I found the following paragraph in the documentation for convertSVGToPDF" "An SVG file can specify alternate color spaces in addition to the required sRGB color specification. These alternate color spaces are not exported by Illustrator 10 to SVG, and are not converted to PDF by this command, except in images. If an alternate color space is defined for an image, it is preserved." That doesn't offer much of an opening--but if you're only concerned about non-sRGB profiles for images, it sounds like there's the possibility of hand-constructing or hand-editing the SVG so that images in the SVG (therefor the PDF) are other than sRGB.

Hi Bob, Thanks for the reply and ideas. Your 1st solution outlined is not really suitable. Ideally, I'd like the profile to not be embedded in the first place, failing that, I'd prefer to fix the problem as close to the cause as possible. The solution I require would need to work for both images and vector art contained within the SVG, so unfortunately that rules out the 2nd solution that you provided. I'm thinking about replacing document server's sRGB profile with an RGB profile that does absolutely nothing, leaving the original colours as they were. Do you know how I'd go about creating or obtaining a profile like this? There are a few very small profiles in Doc Server's color directory (e.g. ColorMatchRGB.icc is 1k in size), maybe one of those will fit the bill? Joe

I don't think that AGS/ADS is using a profile when converting SVG to PDF. SVG is an sRGB format-- so it's more likely just: sRGB SVG in, sRGB PDF out. From the SVG spec Section 12.1 Introduction: All SVG colors are specified in the sRGB color space (see [SRGB]). At a minimum, SVG user agents shall conform to the color behavior requirements specified in the color units section and the minimal gamma correction rules defined in the CSS2 specification. Additionally, SVG content can specify an alternate color specification using an ICC profile (see [ICC32]). If ICC-based colors are provided and the SVG user agent supports ICC color, then the ICC-based color takes precedence over the sRGB color specification. Note that color interpolation occurs in an RGB color space even if an ICC-based color specification is provided (see 'color-interpolation').

Hey Bob, Thanks for your patience. The best way I can think of to illustrate this problem is with a simple example. svg file: rgb.svg <svg width="500" height="500" viewBox="0 0 500 500"> <rect x="0" y="0" fill="#BE0027" stroke="#000000" width="500" height="500"></rect> </svg> commands file: <commands resultOverwrite="true"> <loadContent source="rgb.svg" /> <convertSVGToPDF /> <saveContent name="rgb" appendExtension="true" /> </commands> If you run the commands file and then compare the svg file and the output PDF file side by side, hopefully you should see a small shift in colour between the two red areas. Can you think of anything that I could do to prevent the colour shift from occurring? Thanks, Joe

I see the color shift. The amount depends on how the display is calibarted. I'm not a color matching expert but I think the problem is that AGS is NOT embedding the sRGB profile in the output PDF in a way that Acrobat recognizes. So the color in Acrobat changes based on the monitor calibration. Setting a generic RGB monitor profile seems to eliminate the color shift. Loading the output PDF in Illustrator or Photoshop displays the correct color--they see the profile as sRGB.
