I have a project with 5 AVI files. One 12 sec., one 1min., one 10 min., one 35 min., and one 70 min.with 11 chapter points. I would like to put it on a dual layer dvd without a layer change in the long movie. Using automatic puts a layer jump in the middle of the 70 min file (not at a chapter point), using manual only gives me the choice chapters 3,4 or 5 in the long movie. What I would like to do is put the long file on one layer and the shorter ones on the other. Can it be done? Richard Knight

Not with Encore. You cannot control the creation and physical placment of the individual titles, which is the problem here. Mylenium

Actually you can, to some degree. On the Disc Properties tab in CS3 and CS4, the timeline that is designated as the Main Timeline will be written to disc first. Beyond that, timelines will be written to disc in the order that they are created. -Jeff

Jeff is spot on here - and this gives you the possibility of managing the break where you want it too. Set your main movie - the 70 minute timeline - as the Main Timeline. Leave all Layer Break settings in Encore untouched, and output your DVD to either a folder or an ISO image. If you don;t already have it, go & grab a copy of the excellent freeware tool IMGBurn, and burn your disc with this - it will prompt you to set a layer break at one of the locations it will list for you - and if it is in a legal place, then you will be able to set this to the start of the first additional timeline after the main movie - there is even a preview option for this.
