Saving pictures for Web

Although the "Save for Web" option is live on both the toolbar and drop down menu of "File", when I choose this option nothing happens. The dialog box belonging to that selection does not open. I've tried it on a variety of pics from graphics to jpegs etc, vector, bitmap you name it, but it just doesn't work. Could someone please help me with this? I've only just gottent he software at work and even the preson training me couldn't figure it out.
