attribute values in table of contents

I have an XML document structure that contains some of the titles in attribute values. The handbook does not tell me how to put these into a table of contents, it only gives me hints how to put paragraph texts (e.g. <$paratext>) into it. Does anyone know if it is possible to show attribute values in a toc? Is there a building block (<$xxx>) for it? Thanks for answers.
